Genius RF microneedling in London: what it does, what it costs, and how it compares with Morpheus8

This guide is written by the team that runs Genius at our clinic on Devonshire Place and reviewed by our clinician. It explains what Genius does, the evidence for acne scars, texture and laxity, how it compares with Morpheus8, how we price it, and the risks we go through with you before treatment.

What Genius is

Radiofrequency microneedling is a resurfacing treatment: a tip carrying a grid of fine needles is pressed into the skin and, at a set depth, releases radiofrequency energy that heats and coagulates small zones of tissue around the needle tips. The skin heals those zones with new collagen, which is how texture, scars and mild laxity improve over the following months. The surface is spared because the heat is delivered below it.

Genius is Lutronic's second-generation system, cleared in the US in 2018 as a successor to its Infini device. On the regulator's summaries the standard tip carries 49 needles in a seven-by-seven grid (other tips carry 14, 16 or 25), the needles are 200 micrometres across, the energy is bipolar radiofrequency at 460 kHz with a maximum of 50 watts, and the needle depth is set by the clinician between 0.5 and 3.5 mm on the 2018 label and up to 4.0 mm on the 2026 label. The manufacturer describes the handpiece as monitoring the skin's electrical resistance and adjusting the energy in real time, "over 500 times per second", and calls it the only system that does so. That is the manufacturer's account of its engineering; other systems describe a similar feedback.

Genius reaches up to 4 mm; the 8 mm figure you may see is InMode's quoted reach for the Morpheus8 Body tip, 7 mm of needle plus about 1 mm of heat. And Genius works on the quality of the skin rather than lifting it: the label says coagulation, and the evidence is about texture, scars and firmness, not about moving tissue. For lifting, our sister clinics at the same address offer Ultherapy and Sofwave.

What the US regulator cleared

Genius was first cleared on 10 December 2018 for "dermatologic and general surgical procedures for electrocoagulation and hemostasis", and Lutronic removed the wrinkle wording its older Infini device had carried. A second clearance on 29 June 2026 added "contraction" to the wording, matching Morpheus8's wording, which it named as a secondary predicate; that clearance was based on bench tests in animal tissue showing coagulation zones comparable to Morpheus8.

So Genius is FDA-cleared, a finding of equivalence to earlier devices rather than an FDA approval. As with Morpheus8, its uses for acne scars, lines and laxity come from the published studies of radiofrequency microneedling as a technique rather than from the label, and that is where the evidence below comes from.

Does it work? What the evidence shows

Yes. Radiofrequency microneedling, the technique Genius delivers, improves acne scars, skin texture and firmness in the published studies.

  • Acne scars. A 2025 systematic review of 16 studies and 481 patients concluded that radiofrequency microneedling "is likely an effective treatment for acne scarring" as a sole treatment. In a 30-patient study, three sessions a month apart produced a 26% to 50% improvement at six months in the largest group of patients, with others above and below that band. A 2026 meta-analysis of eight randomised trials and 249 patients found fractional CO2 laser only slightly more effective for scars, and radiofrequency microneedling less painful, with a quarter of the laser's risk of post-inflammatory darkening and shorter redness.
  • Texture, firmness and lines. A 2026 systematic review of 20 studies and 558 participants found consistent improvement in texture and tightening, mostly mild and transient side effects, and satisfaction above 90% in most studies. A 13-patient split-face trial found deeper treatment improved the nasolabial fold more than superficial treatment at three and twelve months. Reviewers describe the collagen remodelling as slow and progressive, still improving six months after treatment.
  • Stretch marks. A meta-analysis found the radiofrequency microneedling subgroup effective for stretch marks, and a 2024 review found no significant difference from fractional CO2 laser, with less darkening.
  • Underarm sweating. Radiofrequency microneedling has been studied for the armpits, where a treatment that has to be repeated every few months did better in a split-side comparison and a randomised trial, so for underarm sweating we recommend miraDry, which is cleared for it in the US, at our sister clinic, Sweat Hospital. For sweating of the face, ask your GP.
  • Genius itself. The device has its own 23-patient study in ageing skin prone to bruising, in which patients were satisfied, a laboratory study on skin samples and a registered combination trial with a laser; for scars, laxity and wrinkles it is judged on the evidence for the technique above. The 2026 clearance rests on bench equivalence to Morpheus8.

What that adds up to: radiofrequency microneedling improves acne scars and skin texture in most people over three sessions, by a moderate amount, building over six months. Genius delivers that technique with its own engineering, and in our experience the results on scars and texture match what the literature describes.

Genius vs Morpheus8

They are the same class of device with the same US indication since 2026, and they have not been compared head to head. The differences on the labels: Genius runs at 460 kHz and 50 watts with 49 needles in its standard tip and a depth of up to 4 mm; Morpheus8 runs at 1 MHz and 65 watts with 12 to 40 pins per tip, to 4 mm with its standard tips and 7 mm with its body tip. Morpheus8's label restricts high energies, above 62 millijoules per pin, to skin types I to IV; the Genius label sets no skin-type limit, and we still assess darker skin carefully and use conservative settings. Morpheus8 has the larger published record; Genius has its impedance-monitoring engineering and bench data showing coagulation zones comparable to Morpheus8.

In practice: for deeper body work on the abdomen or thighs, Morpheus8's 7 mm body tip reaches where Genius's 4 mm does not. For the face, the two do the same job with different engineering, and the clinician's settings and judgement matter more than the badge. Morpheus8 is offered by our sister clinic at the same address, and the clinician advises by your skin, your scars and your tolerance for downtime at your free consultation.

Who it suits, and who it does not

Radiofrequency microneedling suits adults with acne scarring, uneven texture, enlarged pores, fine lines and mild to moderate laxity of the face, neck, jawline or body, including the abdomen after weight change or pregnancy. Is 40 too old? No. The published studies enrolled adults of varied ages, and in our experience the forties and fifties are where the treatment earns its keep: enough collagen left to stimulate, enough change to be worth treating. What matters is not your age but how much of your complaint is texture and firmness, which this treats, and how much is sagging and volume loss, which it does not.

The exclusions below are drawn from clinic consent lists and the microneedling literature, and the clinician checks them against the manufacturer's instructions with you at your consultation:

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • An active skin infection, a cold sore, active acne, eczema or psoriasis in the area.
  • A history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring.
  • Recent isotretinoin (Roaccutane), with the interval confirmed from the manufacturer's instructions.
  • A bleeding disorder or blood thinners, which raise bruising.
  • A pacemaker or other implanted electronic device, or metal implants near the area, as a precaution with any radiofrequency device.
  • Darker skin types need a careful assessment and conservative settings: post-inflammatory darkening is the main published risk, usually transient, occasionally prolonged, and the context in which Morpheus8's label limits high energy to lighter skin.

If you want injectable treatments as well, our doctor can provide them, and we time them around your course: we wait two weeks after an injectable treatment in the area and four weeks after dermal filler before treating the area.

What a session is like, step by step

  1. Consultation. The clinician examines your skin, grades the scarring or laxity, photographs the area, and agrees the depth, the number of sessions and the areas. You get a plan and a price in writing. Consultations and follow-up reviews are free.
  2. Numbing. Topical anaesthetic for 30 to 45 minutes. At higher energies some clinics also inject local anaesthetic; ask us what we use for your plan.
  3. The treatment. The tip is stamped across the area, each stamp inserting the needles to the set depth and delivering the energy. You feel pressure, heat and a prickling, more over bone. Studies rate it 5 to 7 out of 10 with numbing cream. A face takes 20 to 45 minutes.
  4. After. The skin is red, warm and tight, like sunburn, with a grid of pinpoint marks that may bleed a little and crust. In our experience most people are back at work the next day with make-up; the manufacturer says full recovery can take up to a week.

How many sessions, when you see the result, how long it lasts

FeatureWhat to expect
Sessions in a course3, four to six weeks apart, which is what the acne scar studies used and what the manufacturer advises; some scars need a fourth
DowntimeIn our experience redness and swelling for one to three days, sometimes five; pinpoint crusting for up to about five days; full recovery up to a week on the manufacturer's account
First changeIn our experience texture smoother as the skin heals, within a few weeks of the first session
Main resultMeasured at three to six months after the course in the studies; collagen remodelling continues for six months
How long it lastsIn our experience scar remodelling is kept, and firmness fades with ageing
MaintenanceIn our experience a single session every twelve months or so holds skin quality; it is optional, and we discuss it at the three-month review

Is two sessions enough? For skin quality, in our experience two sessions produce a visible change, and some people stop there. For acne scars, the study that shows the 26% to 50% band used three, and in our experience the third session adds to what the first two started. One session is a start; a course is usually three.

RF microneedling vs CO2 laser. The laser edges it for acne scars in the pooled trials but hurts more, keeps you red for longer and carries about four times the risk of darkening, which is why many clinicians prefer radiofrequency microneedling where darkening is the concern; the clinician assesses your scars and your skin type at your free consultation.

RF microneedling vs lifting ultrasound. Different jobs. Ultherapy and Sofwave are cleared to lift the brow, under the chin and the neck; Genius and Morpheus8 are cleared to coagulate and contract tissue, and their evidence is about texture and scars. If your complaint is sagging, start with the lifting conversation; if it is texture and scars, start here. Our sister clinics at the same address offer Ultherapy and Sofwave.

Side effects and risks

Expected: redness, swelling, warmth and tightness for one to three days, pinpoint bleeding and crusting at the needle sites for up to about five days, and dryness or a sandpaper feel for a week. Studies report pain of 5 to 7 out of 10 during treatment despite numbing.

Less common: post-inflammatory darkening, more often in darker skin and usually transient (a review of 35 articles in skin types III to VI found seven studies with transient darkening, one with prolonged darkening and one with lasting scarring); grid or "tram-track" marks, which in one case report in a type IV skin took six months and treatment to recover; cold sore reactivation; a rosacea flare in one case report.

Serious: on the US Food and Drug Administration issued a safety communication on radiofrequency microneedling devices as a class, saying it was "aware of reports of serious complications (adverse events) including burns, scarring, fat loss, disfigurement, and nerve damage, and the need for surgical repair or medical intervention to treat injuries", and that "RF microneedling is a medical procedure, not a cosmetic treatment". A 2026 analysis of the voluntary reports to the regulator from 2013 to 2025 found 114 reports describing 224 events, most often texture change (56), pigment change (41), fat loss (26), inflammatory reactions (18), burns (14) and pain (12); voluntary reports have no denominator, so they give no rate. The US laser and dermatology societies responded that, in their view, the treatment can be performed safely by trained clinicians, and encouraged their members to name those five complications on their consent forms. Ask to see our consent form before the day.

What reduces these risks is a trained clinician, the correct depth over thin tissue and a willingness to stop when the skin says stop; ours is a doctor-led clinical team.

How to choose an RF microneedling clinic in London

  • Ask which device, which tip and what depth. A clinic that cannot tell you has not planned your treatment.
  • Ask who holds the handpiece and who supervises. Ours is a doctor-led clinical team, and this guide is reviewed by Dr Marie Duggan, GMC 7488383; the clinic is CQC registered.
  • Ask for the plan in sessions, areas and pounds, in writing.
  • Ask for the consent form before the day, and check it names burns, scarring, fat loss, disfigurement and nerve damage.
  • If you have darker skin, ask what energy they use and why.
  • Ask where the photographs come from, and for dated ones of their own patients.
  • Ask how the clinic describes pain, downtime and skin type; ours are set out in this guide.

Aftercare

Follow the written sheet your clinician gives you. In outline: a gentle cleanser and a bland moisturiser; no make-up for the first day; no retinoids, acids or exfoliants until the crusting has gone, usually five to seven days; sun protection every day while the skin heals; no swimming, saunas, hot baths or heavy exercise for 48 hours, and in darker skin avoid heat for 72 hours; do not pick the crusts. Tell us about blistering, spreading redness, pus, a cold sore, numbness or weakness that persists, a dent in the skin, or a patch that darkens rather than fades.

Frequently asked questions

How much is RF microneedling in the UK?

We price Genius RF microneedling from a starting price per session, per area and per course, confirmed in writing at a free consultation, and we price match any comparable written quote. Consultations and follow-up reviews are free.

Is microneedling with RF worth it?

For acne scars, uneven texture and mild laxity in someone with realistic expectations, the published evidence says most people get a moderate improvement over three sessions, with a lower darkening risk than ablative laser. Sagging and volume loss need a different treatment: for sagging, our sister clinics at the same address offer Ultherapy and Sofwave, and the clinician advises you at your free consultation.

Is 40 too old for microneedling?

No. The studies enrolled adults across a wide age range, and in our experience the forties and fifties are where texture and early laxity respond well. What matters is whether your complaint is texture and firmness, which this treats, or sagging and volume loss, which it does not.

Is 2 sessions of RF microneedling enough?

For skin quality, in our experience two sessions give a visible change and some people stop there. For acne scars, the study behind the 26% to 50% band used three, and in our experience the third session adds to what the first two started. One session is a start; a course is usually three.

Genius or Morpheus8?

The same class and the same US indication since 2026, and they have not been compared head to head. Genius: 49 needles, 460 kHz, 50 watts, up to 4 mm, and impedance monitoring. Morpheus8: 12 to 40 pins, 1 MHz, 65 watts, 4 mm face and 7 mm body tip, a larger literature, and a label that limits high energy to lighter skin. Our sister clinic at the same address offers Morpheus8, and the clinician advises by your skin and your aim at a free consultation.

Is Genius FDA approved?

It is FDA-cleared, the term for this route: in 2018 for electrocoagulation and haemostasis and in 2026 with contraction added, a finding of equivalence to earlier devices based on bench tests rather than an approval. Its uses for wrinkles, scars and laxity rest on the published evidence for the technique rather than on the label.

Does RF microneedling hurt?

Under numbing cream you feel pressure, heat and prickling, more over bone, and studies rate it 5 to 7 out of 10. Some clinics also inject local anaesthetic at higher energies; ask us what we use for your plan.

Is there any downtime?

Redness and swelling for one to three days, sometimes five, with pinpoint crusting for up to about five days and a dry, sandpaper feel for a week. In our experience most people work the next day with make-up; the manufacturer says full recovery can take up to a week.

How long do the results last?

Collagen remodelling continues for six months, and in our experience scar remodelling is kept and firmness fades with ageing. We review you at three months and discuss a yearly maintenance session then.

Can RF microneedling treat the abdomen?

Yes. Stretch marks respond to radiofrequency microneedling in the studies, as much as to CO2 laser with less darkening; abdominal laxity is treated on the strength of the general evidence and our experience. For deeper body settings, Morpheus8's body tip reaches 7 mm, and our sister clinic at the same address offers it.

Is RF microneedling safe for darker skin?

A lower darkening risk than ablative laser in the pooled trials, but not risk-free: darkening is reported in darker skin, usually transient. Morpheus8's label limits high energy to types I to IV; the Genius label is silent. We assess your skin and use conservative settings.

Does Genius treat hyperhidrosis?

For underarm sweating we recommend miraDry, which is cleared for it in the US, at our sister clinic, Sweat Hospital. Radiofrequency microneedling has been studied for the armpits, where a treatment that has to be repeated every few months did better in a split-side comparison and a randomised trial. For sweating of the face, ask your GP.

What is the difference between RF microneedling and ordinary microneedling?

Ordinary microneedling makes the channels; radiofrequency microneedling makes the channels and heats the tissue at the needle tips, adding a coagulation effect at depth. The skin heals those heated zones with new collagen. The heat also makes it more uncomfortable and more expensive than ordinary microneedling, and brings the heat-related risks set out in this guide.

What are the risks?

Common: redness, swelling, crusting and dryness for days. Less common: darkening in darker skin, grid marks, cold sores, a rosacea flare in one case report. Serious: burns, scarring, fat loss, disfigurement and nerve damage, reported with radiofrequency microneedling devices as a class. The clinician goes through them with you at your free consultation.

How many areas can be done in one visit?

Usually the face, or the face and neck, in one visit; the abdomen or another body area as a separate session or on the same day if you can spare the time. Each area has its own price and its own settings.
